What ad-free streaming actually costs in 2026
Almost every major service now sells a cheaper tier with ads, and prices the original experience as an upgrade. Removing ads from all 7 services that offer the choice costs $47.49 a month โ $569.88 a year, or 68% on top of what the ad-supported tiers cost. Netflix alone accounts for $11.00 of that.
Every figure below is calculated from the same price table the rest of this site uses, so it moves when prices move rather than when someone remembers to update an article.

Netflix charges the most, by a distance
At $8.99 with ads and $19.99 without, Netflix's ad-free tier costs 2.2 times the ad-supported one for the same catalogue โ a 122% increase, and $132.00 a year on its own. No other service on this list comes close in absolute terms.
The cheapest upgrade in dollars is not the gentlest increase, and the two ways of measuring disagree. Discovery+ asks the least in absolute terms at +$4.00 a month โ but on a $5.99 base that is a +67% rise, proportionally steeper than Disney+, Hulu, Peacock Premium and Amazon Prime Video, every one of which charges more per month to remove its ads. A small premium on a cheap service is not the bargain it looks like.
Services with no ad-free upgrade
Not every service sells the choice. These are excluded from the table above, and it is worth knowing why rather than assuming we missed them:
- Apple TV+
- Has never carried ads on any tier, so there is nothing to upgrade away from.
- ESPN+
- Ads are part of live sports broadcasts; no ad-free tier is offered.
- Paramount+
- Its second tier adds Showtime rather than removing ads, so we have no like-for-like pair to price.
- YouTube TV
- Live channels carry their broadcasters' ads on every plan.
Is it worth paying?
The premium is a flat monthly fee no matter how much you watch, which means its real cost depends entirely on your hours. Someone watching every evening spreads $11.00 across a lot of viewing; someone finishing one series a month is paying the same for a handful of evenings.
The larger point is that this decision is usually worth less than the one next to it. Going ad-free everywhere costs $569.88 a year โ but cancelling a service between the shows you actually want to watch saves more than that on its own, because streaming bills monthly with no contract. Our money-saving guide covers the rotation strategy, and the 2026 bundle guide does the same arithmetic for bundles.
Common questions
- How much does it cost to remove ads from streaming services?
- Between $4.00 and $11.00 a month per service. Across all 7 that offer the option it is $47.49 a month, or $569.88 a year.
- Which streaming service charges the most to go ad-free?
- Netflix, at $11.00 a month โ 2.2 times the price of its ad-supported tier for identical content.
- Is the ad-free tier worth paying for?
- It depends on how much you watch, since the premium does not scale with viewing. For occasional viewing the ad tier is usually better value, and rotating services in and out saves considerably more than any ad-free upgrade costs.
- Do all streaming services have an ad-free option?
- No โ Apple TV+, ESPN+, Paramount+, YouTube TV do not offer a like-for-like ad-free upgrade.
